Clogged sink
Sink clogs sit close to the surface: hair and soap in a bathroom drain, grease and food in a kitchen one. You need a sealed drain, water in the basin, and a plunger sized for the bowl.
Which sink, and what is it doing?

Lift the stopper out if it comes free, and plug the overflow hole with a wet cloth. Run an inch of water so the plunger moves water, not air.

On a double sink, block the second drain with a stopper or a wet rag, or the push comes straight back up the other side. Keep enough water in the basin to cover the plunger's mouth.
It drains, just slowly
Slow sinks usually hold hair and soap near the top of the pipe. A few firm strokes with a short plunger often moves it, and that plunger can live under the sink for next time.
Step by step
Pull the stopper
Lift out the pop-up stopper or the strainer if it comes free. Clear any hair you can see.
Seal the other openings
Plug the overflow hole with a wet cloth. On a double sink, block the second drain with a stopper or a rag held down by hand.
Add water
Run water until it covers the plunger's mouth by an inch or so. The plunger needs water to push.
Let the air out
Set the plunger over the drain at a tilt, then press it flat until the bubbles stop.
Plunge
Work 10 to 15 firm strokes, keeping the mouth on the drain. Pull the last stroke up sharply.
Flush it through
If the basin drains, run hot tap water for a minute to carry off what you loosened.
When not to plunge
- You've poured chemical drain cleaner into the sink in the last few hours
- The clog is on the disposal side and the unit still has power
- Several drains back up at once, a sign of a blocked main line
