Slow or clogged tub and shower
In tubs and showers the clog is nearly always hair and soap, often right under the drain cover. Clear what you can reach, then let the plunger move the rest.
What is the tub or shower doing?
Water stands after a shower
Take out the strainer or stopper, then press a wet cloth against the overflow plate. Keep about two inches of water over the drain and plunge straight down.
It drains slowly
Hair tends to sit just under the drain cover. Pull out what you can reach, then plunge to move the rest.
Step by step
Remove the cover
Unscrew or lift out the strainer or stopper. Pull out any hair you can reach.
Seal the overflow
Press a wet cloth against the overflow plate on the tub wall. Without it, the push escapes there.
Fill to cover the drain
Run about two inches of water so it covers the plunger's mouth.
Plunge straight down
Seat the mouth flat over the drain and work steady strokes. Keep the seal between strokes.
Check and repeat
Lift off and watch the level. If it drops slowly, do another round, then run the shower hot for a minute.
When not to plunge
- You've poured drain cleaner or caustic crystals into the tub
- The tub fills when someone flushes the toilet
- Three rounds of strokes change nothing
