Clogs by room

Clogged toilet

Most toilet clogs are paper or waste sitting in the trap, a few inches past the outlet. A bellows plunger clears them by pushing water, so these steps are about getting water, not air, into the pipe.

What is the toilet doing?

Water is rising toward the rim

Don't flush again, and close the shutoff valve behind the toilet. Seat the nose in the outlet and press slowly the first time, so the air leaves the bellows before you push hard.

It drains slowly or needs two flushes

A slow bowl usually means a partial clog in the trap. Work 15 to 20 steady push-pull strokes with water over the nose, then flush once to test.

Low-flush bowl, and my old plunger won't seal

Many newer bowls have an oval or narrow outlet that a flat cup can't cover. The MP1600 has a long funnel nose that goes into that outlet instead of sitting on top of it.

Step by step

  1. Stop the water

Don't flush again. If the bowl is near the rim, close the shutoff valve behind the toilet.

  2. Protect the floor

Lay old towels around the base and put on rubber gloves. Keep a bucket close for bailing.

  3. Set the water level

You want water over the plunger's nose and room below the rim. Bail some out if the bowl is full, or pour some in from a jug if it's low.

  4. Seat the nose and let the air out

Put the nose into the outlet at the bottom of the bowl. Press down slowly the first time, so the air leaves through the valve instead of lifting water over the rim.

  5. Work the strokes

Pull up to fill the bellows, then push down firmly. Keep a steady rhythm for 15 to 20 strokes without breaking the seal.

  6. Test it

Lift the plunger out and watch the level. If it drops, open the valve and flush once, ready to close it if the water climbs.

  7. Clean up

Rinse the plunger with the next clean flush and shake the water out of the folds. Let it drip dry in its bucket.

When not to plunge

  • You poured chemical drain cleaner in: the splash can burn skin and eyes
  • A toy, phone or other solid object went down: plunging drives it deeper
  • Water comes up in the tub or shower when you plunge: call a plumber
